First Steps in Space 50th Anniversary
On Tuesday, September 25, several FWAS members were treated to a unique opportunity to spend the evening with Dr. Sergei Khrushchev as he discussed the 50th anniversary of the Russian space program. The event was hosted by the University of Texas at Arlington in association with the American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum.
Dr. Sergei Khrushchev is an author, educator, engineer, and the son of the late Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. Dr. Khrushchev not only frequently discussed the Soviet space program with his father, he was personally involved with the Russian missile and lunar program. His talk provided insight into how decisions were made in the Kremlin and revealed how the missile race was viewed by Soviet leadership. He also showed how Soviet designers competed more with each other than with Americans in the race for the moon and why, had they survived, Khrushchev and Kennedy were close to an agreement on a joint flight to the moon. Following the lecture, Dr. Khrushchev was available for a question and answer session, as well as for book signing.
