2007 FWAS Picnic Recap
This year’s FWAS picnic was held on September 15 out at the club’s dark sky site in remote Wise County. Newly-elected President John Dowell did the hunting and gathering for the foodstuffs; and Trustee Chris Homer stepped up to the plate again this year to open the gate, cook the food, clean up, and many other tasks that no one ever wants to do.
During early set-up, Juan Martinez’ solar scope was used to witness Sol’s disc totally devoid of any sunspots—a first for many observers.
The weather was just right for a very comfortable picnic and an even more comfortable evening of observing. The moon was the observing fare early on, and then it was on to Jupiter. Lots of kids were in attendance, and they seemed to be quite impressed based on the “oohs” and “ahhhs” heard across the dark sky site. Cumulus clouds by day gave way to clear 5.5 to 6.0 magnitude skies. Nautical twilight brought out the Milky Way and its dark lanes of nebulosity for the naked eye. Then the viewing began in earnest (with maybe another trip or two to the peach cobbler). A good time was had by all as it was another fun night of friends, food, and the stars.
